What is tobacco?
Tobacco is a green, leafy plant that is grown in warm climates. After it is picked, it is dried, ground up, and used in different ways. It can be smoked in a cigarette, pipe, orcigar. It can be chewed (called smokeless tobacco or chewing tobacco) or sniffed through the nose (called snuff).
Tobacco smoke is a toxic mix of more than 7,000 chemicals. Many are poisons. When thesechemicals get deep into your body’s tissues, they cause damage. Your body must fight to heal the damage each time you smoke. Over time, the damage can lead to disease.

Both smoking and chewing tobacco can bedangerous. In the U.S., tobacco use accounts for 20% of the deaths caused by respiratory and cardiovascular diseases and lung cancer.
Cardiovascular Diseases
Tobacco smoke can increase the risk ofgetting cardiovascular diseases. It hosts carbon monoxide, which reduces oxygen levels in the blood. Thus, vital organs such as the lungs, heart and brain do not get enough oxygen to function properly.Therefore, smoking increases the risk of hemorrhages, blood clots, aortic aneurysm, heart attack and high blood pressure. Smoking also increases triglyceride levels while reducing good cholesterollevels in the blood. This raises the chances of cerebrovascular diseases, stroke and coronary heart diseases.
Lung Cancer
Smoking is the main cause of lung cancer. Eighty percent of lung cancer casesare due to cigarette smoking. Besides, smoking also raises the risk of other cancers affecting body organs such as the cervix, bladder, kidneys, stomach, pancreas, esophagus and mouth.
