A Brief History of Roman Times in Britain:
* Before Romans came to Britain the island was occupied by different tribes like the Celts and the Picts (these one in the north).
* Ancient Brits were good at making jewellery, textiles and farming. They also knew how to use iron.
* In 55bc Julius Caesar, tried to invade England and said:

Weeny I saw
Weaky I conquered
* Over the next 300 years the Romans and the Ancient Brits mixed together
* Some of the Ancient Brits chiefs (or kings) became very rich.
* The Romans with the Ancient Brits, built roads, bath houses, temples and houses. They also built a big wall in the north to separate and protect Englandfrom the Picts and Scots.
* When the Roman Empire became Christian, Britain started to become Christian; and when the Roman Empire divided Britain was in the “western” part.
* The Romans and the Ancient Brits mixed together creating a new group of people the “Romano Brits” they were protected by the Roman legions (army).
The Dark Ages:
* This period is called like that because of theRoman government and their civilization collapsed during 410 --> 800 A.D
* Some Saxons and Germanics tribes were living in England at the time the Romans left.
* The Romano Brits were being attacked and asked others to protect them.
* There was a big battle between Saxons and the Brits won maybe because of King Arthur.
* Vortigen was a king. He made an agreement to pay Saxonstribes for defending his kingdom. But he did not pay and lost his kingdom.
Anglo Saxons:
* They settled in Britain during the dark ages.
East Anglia Angles lived here
Essex East Saxons
Sussex South Saxons
* Anglo Saxons came to Britain because their land often flooded and they can’t grow crops, so they were looking new places to settle down andfarm.
* The Anglo Saxons and Jute tribe’s invaded Britain in 5 and 6 century are known as the Anglo Saxons. Their left their homelands in northern Germany, Denmark and northern Holland and rowed across the North Sea in wooden boats.
* There were many Saxon kings; one of the most powerful was Osul he came from Northumbria. Another one was Offa from Mercia.
* Northumbria was also the homeof Bede, he wrote a history book about the English.
* The Kings fought and become more powerful.
* They become Christians and started writing history.
* When Bede died he predicted that bad times were to come.
* The bad times were the Vikings, but they also helped the most famous Saxon king re-write England, it was Alfred “the Great”.
King Alfred the Great:
* 4th son of king.* He became king because his older brother died.
* He fought battles but nearly lost everything.
* He regrouped the army and went to attack the Guthrums Vikings. He defeated them but did not kill them.
* Alfred was the first king to the west Saxons to style himself king of the Anglo Saxons.
The Viking Homelands:
* Was very long and narrow, all that they can gaze or plough isby the sea and even that is very rocky in some places. There lie wild mountains.
The Vikings:
* They came from Scandinavia, now we call it Denmark, Sweden and Norway.
* They became good sailors.
* Sometimes they have to travel to other countries to find food, trade or steal.
* They ate:
Pig bones
Sheep bones
Goat bones
Cattle bones
Fish bones
Deer bones
Goose bones
Wildfruit seeds
Pea seeds
Barley seeds
Wheat seeds
King Edward the Confessor Dies:
* At the end of 1065 he is old and ill, he is dying.
* 3 people want to be the king; Harold Godwinson, William Duke of Normandy and Harold Hardrader.
* Before Edward dies he asked Harold to be the king.
* Harold becomes king at the beginning of the year 1066.
* William was angry.
