Second Language acquisition during early childhood
Language is a unique human ability. It is impossible to stop a typical childfrom learning language.
Almost all children acquire at least one language. But many children, around the world learn more than one language during the preschool years. Some children learn two, or more,languages from birth, when parents speak different languages.
Take my children as an example. My children were born in Texas, USA. By the time they went to first grade they spoke, read and wroteSpanish and only some English. I thought this was important for my children because they had roots in Spain. They had grandparents, uncles, ants and nephews.
They needed to communicate in Spanish withtheir family.
But there are parents and educators that have expressed skepticism about raising infants and toddlers bilingually. They believed that learning one language is normal, but learning twolanguages would be a burden and put children at risk for delay and impaired language development.
I was not that worry. I had also my own experience as a bilingual child. At a young age, my fathermoved our family to Germany. Without knowing a word in German, we had to attend German public school. I am not going to lie, it was difficult at first. My sister Teresa and I cried because day after daywe went to school and did not understand a word. In time, within a year my sister and I spoke, wrote, and read German. And we also made very good German friends.
Students who are learning Englishas a second language is a topic of great interest in public schools in the United States because these students represent one of the fastest growing populations. It is estimated that by 2030, about 40%of the school population will speak English as a second language. Sometimes students who are learning English are misdiagnosed as having a disability when they are actually manifesting the normal...
