Read the following text about Burns’ life:
Although he was a famous poet, Burns was poor. He said he was often “left, like a true poet, without a sixpence”. The first edition ofhis first collection of poems, which included such famous poems as “To a Mouse” and “The Two Dogs”, brought him only £20. He contributed to Thomson’s Scottish collection of songs with 100 songs and itbrought him a picture, a shawl for his wife and £5. By April 1796 Burns knew he was dying of rheumatic heart disease and wrote to a friend: “I fear it will be some time before I tune my lyre again.By Babel’s streams I have sat and wept … I close my eyes in misery and open them without hope…”. In one of his last letters, he asked his cousin for money and his father-in-law to take care of hiswife, Jean, who was pregnant of their ninth child. While he was being buried in July 1796, Burns’ wife gave birth to their son Maxwell. He died in infancy.
