THANKSGIVING
In 1620, a group of about 100 pilgrims left England. They were being persecuted because of their religious beliefs. They sailed across the Atlantic Ocean in a ship called “TheMayflower”. They landed in America on the coast of Massachusetts at a place they named Plymouth. When the pilgrims landed, they met the native “Indians” in the area, the Wampanoag, who were expertfarmers. Theygrew corn, beans and pumpkins. They were hunters and good fishermen. TheEnglish pilgrims had no success in their attempts to grow English crops, and few of the settlerssurvived the terrible winter. Thenatives felt sorry for the settlers and taught them how to farm, huntand fish and gave them supplies of food and furs. Two of the natives, Samoset and Squanto ,learned English and they were of greathelp for the survival of the pilgrims.

The natives, who greatly respected nature, already had several “thanksgiving” festivals celebratingthe fertility of Mother Earth. One pilgrim prepared adinner to celebrate their first harvest close to thedate of one of these rituals, and so the pilgrim invited Squanto and his friends and family to jointhem. Over 90 natives came to the celebration. Asthere was not enough food for everyone, a fewnatives went hunting and came back with deer and the celebration, which lasted 3 days, begun.Sadly, this was one of the last times that the natives and thesettlers spent together in peace. Over the next 50 years, the European diseases or the settlers killed the majority of the Native Americans
