For hundreds of years following the breakup of the western roman empire, europe was the scence of widespread disorder and change.
Gradually europeans began to restore order in their lives. Manyhistorians see the years between the 400s and about 1500 as a transition in the development of western culture.
Many germanic tribes plundered europe and established small kindoms.
Th franks firstcame into contact with the roman empire during the 200s, when they began moving into the lower rhine river valley.
Clovies was an able military leader, he and his tropos conquered and absorbed otherfrsnkish tribes.
The franks son seized and began to rule sowthwestern gaul.
After pepin II died, his son, charles Martel, known as charles the hammer, became mayor of the place.
Charles Martel died in741. His son, pepin III called “the short” became the merovingian kindoms joint wayor of the palace with his brother, carloman pepin.
The popes confirmation of pepins rule, moreover, strengthenedthe legitimacy of the new Carolingian dynasty.
The pope sought pepins help against the lombards, a Germanic tribe that was attacking central Italy and threatening rome.
The alliance that grew betweenthe franks and the church as a result of these actions made each side stronger.
Charlemgne inherited the franklish throne in 768 and ruled until 814. During the 46 years of his reign, Charlemagneworked to build a “new rome” centered in what is now france and gemany.
Charlemagne spent much of his life at war. He defeated the lomards in ilaty, the Saxons in northen Germany and the avars incentral Europe.
On chrismas day of the year 800, Charlemagne was in rome to worship at saint peter’s basilica. As Charlemagne knelt in prayer, pope leo III placed a crown on his head and declared him“emperor of the romans”
Charlemagne was a very conscious of his unique position as leader of a new western order. He saw himself, moreover, as a inheritor of roman authority.
