According to the Macmillan Dictionarythe word humanity means “all the people who are living in the world and of behaving and thinking in the same way as others.” It also implies “a kind and sympathetic attitude towards other people,especially when they are suffering in some way.”
2. What does the author mean by Davos culture? Is Ecuador a participant? Why or why not? How does the author divide the world using this metaphor?By Davos culture the author may refer to the assumptions, values and doctrines currently held by many people in the Western civilization and by some people in other civilizations. Every yearthousands of businessmen, bankers, government officials, journalists and intellectuals meet in the World Economic Forum in Switzerland. They all share similar beliefs like individualism, market economies andpolitical democracy. They also use English as the principal language of communication.
The author divides the world in two parts: an elite level is part of the Davos culture and the rest of theworld. Davos culture is far from being a universal culture because it only represents the 1% of the world’s population.
3. What are the explanations for the current existence of a universalculture and what are the arguments against it?
The emergence of a universal culture is based on three assumptions:
* The fail of the Soviet Union meant the end of history and the universal triumphof liberal democracy worldwide. This is based in the Cold War point of view, in which the only solution to Communism is democracy.
* The amplified interaction among peoples is generating acommon world culture; this reduces the probability of conflicts between nations.
