The Help
The main character in this movie is Eugenia “Skeeter” Phelan, a Young White woman who wants to be a reporter. The movie’s setting is a little country called Jackson. When Skeeter was youngshe was raised by a black maid called Constantine, but while she was studying at the University of Mississippi Constantine quitted her job as her mother told her. Skeeter is reluctant to accept thatshe quitted.
Skeeter is very different from her friends, who only worried about finding a husband and being housewives, while Skeeter wants to have a career and is single. She got a job writing the“homemaker hints” at a journal and asked Aibileen, the black maid of her friend Elizabeth, to help her. Her friends, especially one called Hilly Holbrook believed that black people were inferior to whitepeople. Hilly even began a “Home Help Sanitation Initiative” to make separate toilets for black workers in every house, led by the belief that they carried different diseases that could betransferred to them. Skeeter is against this way of thinking and she decides to write a book about the lives of these maids and the injustices they have to live through.
At first the maid didn’t want to speakwith Skeeter because it was a time when their freedom was extremely limited and they couldn’t express themselves freely. Aibileen was finally convinced by Skeeter and she began to share her storieswith her. Her friend Minny, another black maid had just been fired from her job at Hilly’s house for using her toilet during a thunderstorm. Minny couldn’t find a new job because Hilly had talked toall the other families about what a bad maid she supposedly was. At the beginning Minny also refused to talk with Skeeter but she eventually agreed. Minny found a job with Celia Foote, a woman marriedto a rich socialite who’s rejected by the society ladies at Jackson as her husband is Hilly’s ex-boyfriend.
