The Mount Rushmore National Memorial
Gutzon Borglum and 400 workers carved the colossal 18-meter busts of U.S. presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln thatrepresent the first 150 years of history of the United States.
The historian Doane Robinson is credited with the conception of the idea of carving portraits of famous people in the Black Hills region ofSouth Dakota in order to promote tourism in the region, the initial idea of Robinson was sculpting "the Needles" (it is a region of South Dakota), but Borglum was it said that the sculpture shouldhave a national approach, and chose the four presidents whose likenesses would be carved into the mountain. After federal funding, the construction of the monument began in 1927, and the faces of thepresidents were completed between 1934 and 1939. After the death of Gutzon Borglum, in March 1941, his son Lincoln Borglum took over construction. Although the initial concept called for everypresident who is represented from head to waist, lack of construction financing to closure in late October 1941.
George Washington was the first President of the United States of America between 1789 and1797; also, he was Commander in Chief of the revolutionary Continental Army in the War of Independence of the United States (1775-1783). He is considered the Father of the Nation.
