The Sea captain’s Tale
A rich merchant of St. Denis had a beautiful wife who loved the parties. Therefore the merchant made parties all the days and a lot of people came. One of his guests was ahandsome young Monk named Brother John.
The Monk started to have a good relation with the Merchant. But to have a closer relationship the monk named the merchant as his cousin. The Merchantgood-naturedly didn’t deny this claim and swore kinship to the Monk. The Monk was always welcome in the Merchant’s house and liked by everybody because he always got gifts.
One day the Merchant planned go toBrussels to buy merchandise. He sent a messenger to Paris to invite Brother John to spend a few days with him and his wife before his trip to Brussels. The Monk accepted and went immediately to St.Denis.
After the third day of Brother John’s visit, the Merchant woke up early and went to his counting room to count his money. This work kept busy the Merchant until nine in the morning. The Monk alsowoke up early so he was in the garden when the merchant's wife went there to talk to him. The merchant's wife asked the Monk the reason for his getting up so early in the morning. The Monk answeredthat he only needed five hours sleep but that probably she needs sleep more since the Merchant may have kept her awake all night. The merchant's wife protested that she never got the least pleasurefrom that game and that she was so miserable that she was thinking of running away or even killing herself.
The Monk asked her the cause of her grief because he could give her an advice. Both promisednever said what they were going to said. The merchant's wife then apologized to the Monk for saying bad things about her husband since he is his cousin. The Monk immediately revealed that he wasn't herhusband’s cousin and had only used kinship to be nearer to her because he was in love with her.
