The United Nations
The United Nations is an international organization of independent states, with its headquarters in New York City. It was born after World War II by the Charter of the UnitedNations signed in San Francisco, on June 26 1945, to replace the League of Nations, to stop wars between countries, and to provide a platform for dialogue. It contains multiple subsidiary organizations tocarry out its missions. But its main purpose is to bring nations together to work for peace and development.
Firstly, we must know what peace and security are:
* Peace:
* “1) Freedomfrom disturbance; tranquillity
* 2) A state or period in which there is no war or a war has ended
* A treaty agreeing peace between warring states
* The state of being freefrom civil disorder
* The state of being free from dissension”
* Security
* “1) The state of being free from danger or threat
* The safety of a state or organizationagainst criminal activity such as terrorism, theft, or espionaje
* Procedures followed or measures taken to ensure the security of a state or organization
* The state of feeling safe,stable, and free from fear or anxiety
* 2) A thing deposited or pledged as a guarantee of the fulfilment of an undertaking or the repayment of a loan, to be forfeited in case of default.”(Oxford Dictionary Online)
As we said, peace and security are some of the aspects the UN tries to cover. Some of the bodies they include are:
* Security Council
Maintains international peace andsecurity in accordance with the principles and purposes of the UN. The most important nations in this committee are: US, UK, France, China and Russia. They are the ones who take all the decisions, toapprove them, the permanent members must agree, regardless of other nations’ decisions. The rest of the members are “forced” to follow.
