The Great Depression DBQ Essay
By the 1930s, unemployment was rising up to one out of four Americans without a job. No jobs and no money broughtissues to the hands of Americans. The government and people themselves took action to stop the Great Depression by forming organizations. America was facing a difficult time during the GreatDepression.
The Greta Depression brought a multitude of problems to the United States. When the stock market crashed on October 29, 1929, the economy of the U.S. fell. Because of the crash, people lostmoney which meant that they had to buy fewer products than before. (Doc.1) Americans not only lost money, but thousands of them even went through a foreclosure. People, who didn’t have any place to go,began building shacks. Groups of these so-called “homes” were given the name Hoovervilles, after President Herbert Hoover. They called them this because they blamed the problems on President Hoover.Another problem Americans faced was banks failing. Banks across the country were running out of money and couldn’t pay the people who loaned money, back. But it wasn’t only the stock market. Consumersallowed the Great Depression to happen because of the use of the installment plan to buy goods, when they didn’t actually have the savings for it. When people lost their jobs, they couldn’t pay theirdebt. People also bought stocks with a down payment of up to only 10 percent. When the stocks dropped, they lost all their money and lost money on their worthless stocks too. (Doc.6) These dilemmas weretaken on during the Great Depression.
For the election of 1933, America was ready to get Herbert Hoover out of office.
