Jacinto Convit was born on September 11, 1913. He studied medicine in the Central University of Venezuela . There he met Doctor Martin Vegas, pioneer inthe study on Leprosy, and Convit become his discipline.
In 1937, still a medicine student, he visited White Cabo, an imprisonment center for leprosy patients. This visit determined the course his lifewould take. In this investigations of prevention and treatment of leprosy, he invented a vaccine against Leishmaniasis .
Convit was given the Nobel Prize in medicine by Venezuela, he received themedal “Health for all in year 2000” of the Pan-American Organization of the health and the prize “Prince of Austurias” in 1987.
A Convit quote: “to destroy is easy, to build requires years” a goodreflection to all Venezuelans just now when we are looking for solutions to many problems in our darling country.
At the present time, he is the director of National Institute of Biomedicine andPan-American Center of research and Training of Leprosy and Tropical diseases, as well as the head university chair in the Medical School “José Maria Vargas” (Caracas).
