Water reuse comparison between Republic of Korea and Peoples Republic of China

Juan Jeronimo Nieblas Petrissans

Abstract.- Both China and Korea are countries with water issues. They have pollution in their rivers, lakes, reservoirs and aquifers, which is mainly due to economical growth. Whichever differences the countries have, they both have the necessity forwater reuse projects in order to sustain or improve their way of living. Some water reuse projects are currently underway. We are know entering the slope of water reuse growth.

Introduction

Water reuse technology has come a long way since the beginning of the last century when governments started using reclaimed water for irrigation purposes (golden gate park, 1912), slowly but surely reuse technologies have advanced until now, when we face an almost critical world water situation, this has led government’s and private companies to investin newer and cheaper water reuse solutions. Countries around the world have to implement these systems into their water network in order to alleviate some of the damage that occurs because of industry, agriculture, human settlements, irresponsible waste disposal, fossil mismanagement, etc.
One of the biggest issues regarding water resources management comes when undeveloped countries want to groweconomically; usually this comes at a big price, environmentally speaking. The issue is; how can we help developing nations become rich without degrading or depleting their water?
In this paper I’m going to revise and compare two Asian countries that have gone through some impressive economic growth in the past 50 years, the first one is The Peoples Republic of China which has grown at a fastpace since the Chinese government decided to open up to the world and allowed foreign investments, the second one is The Republic of Korea or better known as South Korea, that underwent Civil unrest that led to a war and finally to the division of the north and the south; after the war South Korea grew into a fully developed nation.
The purpose of this paper should not be that of a judging pointon deciding who is better or worst, both countries have different needs and different characteristics, it should just deliver some insight on the water reuse needs and status of each country, The comparison will give us a broader picture of some of the water problems and solutions undergoing in Asia, this is because of the differences and similarities between China, South Korea and the rest ofAsia. They both represent different Asian nations; developed and developing, small and large, democratic and socialist, etc.

Chinese General Background
The Peoples Republic of China has the biggest population in the world, according to the 2010 census China had a 1,339,724,852 population. The Chinese Government however launched a “one child per-family” policy to try and control the growth rate...
