What is an addiction?

Addictions are chronic and persistent behaviors that wecontinue to do despite the negative consequences, and although common addictions such as alcoholism and drug abuse may immediately come to mind, some people suffer from addictive behaviors -- and strange ones, at that. We may joke that we're addicted to chocolate, but what if you really were addicted to it? What if you couldn't stop eating chocolate no matter how sick it made you? Or, what if you wereaddicted to something else -- such as online gaming or eating dirt?
"Like addiction to heroin, these 'addictions' are an effort to control or avoid discomfort instead of learning to cope with it in ways that don't interfere with a person's relationships, safety or livelihood,"

Weird addictions!

1) Shopping addiction
Omniomania, compulsive shopping (or what's more commonly referred to asshopping addiction), is perhaps the most socially reinforced of the behavioral addictions.
In this addiction shopping addicts become preoccupied with spending, and devote significant time and money to the activity. Actual spending is important to the process of shopping addiction; window shopping does not constitute an addiction, and the addictive pattern is actually driven by the process ofspending money.
Compulsive shoppers use shopping as a way of escaping negative feelings, such as depression, anxiety, boredom, self-critical thoughts, and anger. Unfortunately, the escape is short-lived. The purchases are often simply hoarded unused, and compulsive shoppers will then begin to plan the next spending spree. Most shop alone, although some shop with others who enjoy it. Generally, itwill lead to embarrassment to shop with people who don’t share this type of enthusiasm for shopping.Finally the could get indebt because of the credit cards.

***What are warning signs of compulsive shopping and spending?

Shopping or spending money as result of feeling disappointed, angry, or scared
Shopping or spending habits causing emotional distress in one's life
Having arguments withothers about one's shopping or spending habits
Feeling lost without credit cards
Buying items on credit that would not be bought with cash
Feeling a rush of euphoria and anxiety when spending money
Feeling guilty, ashamed, embarrassed, or confused after shopping or spending money
Lying to others about purchases made or how much money was spent
Thinking excessively about money
Spending a lot oftime juggling accounts or bills to accommodate spending

2) Exercising addiction

It´s known as Bigorexia, this is a disorder in which a person becomes obsessed with the idea that he or she is not muscular enough. In this disorder a person is preoccupied with thoughts concerning appearance, especially musculature. It is strictly connected with selective attention: individuals selectivelyfocus their attention on perceived defect (too skinny body, underweight etc.). They are hypervigilant to even small deviations from perceived ideal and they ignore information that their body image is not consistent with reality. These people feel really bad when they don´t do their exercise routine.
