Dear student: Welcome to Basic 4. In this level you will continue learning and practicing English. You will develop your listening, writing, reading and speaking skills more. You will also learn more grammar that will help you understand the language better. Also, this bookcontains more vocabulary words that are related to your studies in Engineering. Remember that classes will be given in English ONLY. You will be expected to speak in English in class at all times. Instructions in the workbook are also in English only. The objective is that you learn more vocabulary and improve your reading skills more. Our suggestion is that you read more, study and do your homeworkevery day. Try to speak English at all times in the classroom. Do this when you talk to your classmates or teacher. You can ask your teacher to write more vocabulary or expressions that are helpful for you to use in class. Don t get demotivated if you don t understand something in class. You can ask your teacher or one of your classmates to explain the information to you. Participate as much as youcan in class. This is important for your learning process and it will also help your self-esteem. Remember that you need to get at least an 80 on your final written exam to pass to the intermediate levels. You need to give a final oral presentation in order to evaluate your oral progress using different structures you learned throughout these four basic levels. Finally, arrive to your class ontime and pay attention to your teacher. Be responsible with your homework. This course you are taking is a big effort your school is making to help you graduate with more tools and better chances to get a very good job. Enjoy your classes and learn a lot!

CAN is a modal auxiliary. Modal auxiliaries express an idea. We use CAN to express an ability, an opportunity or permission in present. We use CAN with all the subjects. When we use CAN, we always use the VSF.
