Ex-Leader Bosnian Serb Radovan Karadzic is the perpetrator of the worst atrocities committed against humanity in Balkancountries, which include the massacre of more than 8,000 Muslim men and boys and 10,000 civilians. He is considered as a war criminal and the most wanted men.
Radovan Karadzic was born in 1945 inMontenegro. He studies at the Sarajevo University of Medicine and became a psychiatrist. He was a devoted Serb nationalist. His earliest influence was his father, Vuk, who was also a nationalist andloyal to Josip Broz Tito. His actual political learning started after the death of Tito, when the Yugoslav unity began to break. Karadzic helped to found the Serbian Democratic party, which was formed tocreate the “Great Serbia.”
In 1992 Muslim and Croat officials in Bosnia organized a referendum on Bosnia independence from Yugoslavia, which contradicted Karadzic’ vision of a “Greater Serbia.”Karadzic revealed his discomfort against the independence Bosnia as a sovereign state; he said "Don't think that you wouldn't send the Bosnian people to hell and maybe cause the Muslim people to vanish,because the Muslim people can't defend themselves if the war starts here." It resulted in an inevitable split of Bosnia and Karadzic declaring himself as the president of Bosnian Serb.
The warbegan as Karadzic started to proclaim territory. He recruited military forces to seize control of the country and lay siege to Sarajevo. Thousand of Muslims and Croats were killed in Karadzic’s campaignof ethnic cleansing. According to a colleague in the New York Times Karadzic claim his mission was to protect Christian Serbs from Bosnian Muslims. The most overwhelming episode of the war was thesiege of Sarajevo, which supposed to be a secure area by the UN.
