“How?” The question, “how” infers. It presumes. It is technical. How do you build a house? How do you wear a hat? How can I get into college? How do I learn how to be an actor? How much can Ilean about Theater?
As a teenager and a young artist, I now realize I have seen most of my world through the question “how”. Except, this past fall, in English we read a play titled, Six Degreesof Separation, and within this show there is a revolving, double sided Kandinsky painting. Being a curious reader, I rummaged through the web, hoping to find something interesting about this painter,Kandinsky. In fact, Wassily Kandinsky wrote an essay called Concerning the Spiritual in Art. This essay, especially the second section, The Movement of the Triangle, helped me broaden my horizonsto realize the world I live in and that it is not the “how?” we need to be asking, but the “what?”.
To quote Kandinsky, “If the emotional power of the artist can overwhelm the “how?” and can give freescope to his finer feelings, then art is on the crest of the road by which she will not fail later on to find the “what” she has lost”. And according to this essay, if we as artists do ask thequestion, “what”, we will move the “triangle…almost invisibly forwards and upwards.” In Kandinsky’s mind, the power of questioning what is already in existence and the power of creating “something” new,progresses society, humanity, (the triangle) forward. “The what which will show the way to the spiritual food of the newly awakened spiritual life.”
As the human race, we have stuck through somebad times. As humans, it is our nature to fall every once and a while in to a dark age. At one point, that’s exactly what they were too: The Dark Ages. They came directly after the fall of one of thegreatest achievements in history, the Roman Empire.
