Preface
In Brian Doyle's Joyas Voladores he begins by writing about the heart of a hummingbird to the hearts of others and ends up making the reader ponder questions about life itself. The point of this assignment was to explore an observation in order to connect it to a larger theme as did Doyle in his essay, as well as other examples that wehave read. I wanted to compare the playing of a video game to the need for reflection and escape in our lives.
Like Doyle, I used the use of “we” strongly in my final paragraph. He says, “We all churn inside. . . We are utterly open with no one. . . We open windows. . . we think there will come” (274). This use of we helps change the tone in the essay. For the beginning, Doyle is focused onthe topic on the hummingbird and then he sneaks in “you” a few times, but then he ends the essay with “we” which is what helped me understand what he was getting at. That we should be looking into our hearts based off of the observation of other animals and how they lead their lives in comparison to their hearts.
Going back to the use of “you” made his essay stronger. When he writes “It'sexpensive to fly. You burn out. You fry the machine. You melt the engine” it is a sudden comparison. It drags the reader from the thought that this essay solely speaks about hearts of hummingbirds and throws them into the essay. In my essay I wanted to use “you” to drag the reader into what he/she is reading. Unlike Doyle, however, I felt the use of “you” needed to be used from the start inorder to make the essay stronger.
In my essay I hope to compare the playing of video games to reflection and escape, that appear necessary, in our lives. Based off of Doyle's essay were the use of the pronouns “we” and “you.” The use of we helps make the point of the paper more personal, so that we can understand how the point of the essay relates to us. The use of “you” helps bring the readerdirectly into the essay which, essentially strengthens it.

To the Gamer
You hit the power button and the lights come on, a cue to start mashing the A button as quick as you can because once you see the intro once, selecting to start a new game and getting to the actual action is the real goal. Suddenly you are greeted by a friendly professor who cheerily exclaims “Welcome to the world ofPokémon!”
Pokémon is a role-playing game (RPG) that has been around since the mid-1990s, created by Game Freak Inc. and published by the video game company Nintendo. You are put into a world filled with fantastic creatures called pokémon that you capture in order to battle with and against. You play the role of a kid who is just starting out on his or her journey in order to become the best in the land. There is a fairly linear plot in each game, but unlike some other genres of games, there is customization that allows the player to do whatever he or she wishes, well . . . as long as it follows along the plot.
The game is filled with different types of customization. After selecting what gender your character is, you can name him or her and then you get to name the rival. Do you want to useyour real name? Go for it! What about the name you wished you had or something that makes you laugh every time your character's name is mentioned? There is nothing stopping you. Feel free to call your rival Sr. Poofy because his hair is the first thing you notice. Heck, using vulgar words isn't uncommon in the community, they aren't original or witty, but whatever floats your boat. Not onlyare you able to name the human characters, but each time that you capture a new pokémon, you are asked to give it a nickname. Apart from the main character, you do not have to change the name of anyone else, so you can either be as creative or as simple as you wish; your pokémon's name can just be it's default: the species name itself. You will have the opportunity to change the name of your...
