Reading Response to the Bauhaus
Bauhaus was a very influential movement of the Modernism because of the influence andimpact it caused on the development of arts. Old, previous art schools were not able to teach that influences because they didn’t look for answers in workshops as Gropius did and thought should bemade; artists were to learn at least one craft as an indispensable basic for architecture.
Walter Gropius in hand with the government tried to encourage young students from around the world to be apart of this school and this fresh ideas. Gropius saw the answers of a lost architecture in the combination of arts and the creation of complete buildings, the Government saw an opportunity in thisschool for the post-war reconstruction.
One of the greatest achievements for the Bauhaus, was the building at Dessau. The building represented technical, social and aesthetic requirements that Gropiushad always aimed at. In the building design, he developed ideas that he had already applied at the construction of the Fagus factory . The glas facade or curtain wall is the central design element. Itis suspended in front of the load-bearing framework and shows the constructive elements. Gropius allowed the glass surface to overlap, to create the impression of lightness. The construction was wasunpractical beacuse the students were too cold in summer and too hot in winter, so a textile curtain was implemented.

Another important design element, is the separation of the building partsaccording to their functions. Wings of the buildings are arranged asymmetrically. In order to appreciate the design of the complex, the observer must walk around the whole building. There is no centralviewpoint.
