Biografìa Jose Pedro Varela (Inglés)

I am going to talk about José Pedro Varela, was born in eighteen forty five in March nineteen during the “Guerra Grande”.
His father was a businessman andthe owner of a deposit of “frutos del país” where Varela improved his skills when he was a teenager.
When he was twenty two years-old he travelled toEurope and the USA and met a few famous writers, such as Victor Hugo and Domingo Faustino Sarmiento. Varela learned a lot of things about literature andeducation, especially from Sarmiento. He attached Varela with a lot of educational scientists from the USA with the propose of learning about educational institutes,their methods and goals. Varela understood the fact that it was very important to have the right education for everyone.
When he came back to Uruguay, heworked as a journalist and he promoted his ideas and plans for a new education.
He started an organization with some friends such as Elbio Fernández andCarlos María Ramírez called “Sociedad de Amigos de la Educación Popular”. In nineteen seventy four he published his book “La educación para el pueblo” and twoyears later “La legislación escolar”
Finally, Lorenzo Latorre, that was the president of that moment, offered Varela to be the national education director.Varela could developed his ideas and plans and he invented a new law of general education. The law said that it was an obligation to every kid to go to schooland the government should create public schools for those who couldn’t pay.
Varela dead when he was only thirty-four years old in eighteen seventy nine.
