Learn a new language like a kid
Since I was little my parents put me in an English school, but at the time I was 16 I still struggling with English. When I finished high school I felt good of the fact that I was not going to see English anymore. At that time U.S.A wasn’t in my future. I am really good in mathematics and mechanical stuff than languages so I matriculated in Electronic Engineer andI was studying for two and a half years but then I have the opportunity to move to Miami. At the beginning I was surprised that in Miami not everybody speaks English so wasn’t that difficult to live around. Then I decided to move to Miami Beach, the difference is that more people speak English and also other languages. I lived in Brickell for 4 years, most of the people in Brickell is from LatinoAmerica but in Miami Beach people is from everywhere in the world like Russia, Turkish, India, Haiti, Siberia, etc. For that reason everybody have to speak English like a second language. I went to Eastern Europe this year and I was impressed that in Ukraine they learn Russian and English in high school, because there are not too many people that speak English than people who speak Russian,Ukrainians can practice more Russian than English and that’s why they are fluent in Russian and Ukrainian. So I realized that my English was getting better because I was practicing the language and I think that is the clue for a faster learning. After I came back I started learning Russian too. I like to say that when was kid I repeat all the words that I listened from the people around me, when I wasa teenager I study the rules of the language and like an adult I practice talking to people what I learned before, these are the tools and these is what now I use to learn a new language.
When you see a kid press attention to them when you are talking and you would see that they repeat what you are saying. You will realize that kids can talk another language faster because they repeat constantlywords every day and memorized them. Kids don’t learn grammar or writing yet, they just listen. When I started learning Russian I start repeating words every day, then phrases like “how are you” and more until was easy to me to listen and understand the word without knowing how to write it or the proper grammar involved on it. Listening of a word pronunciation and repeating it is the first key forlearning a new language in my case.
Teenagers for second they go to school and spent hours learning the grammar and the correct writing of the language that they are learning. At this age they can write those words when they were kids were repeating. Part of learning is educate yourself and that’s the hardest part of learning. For me, remember is really difficult because is not on me, but alsois not impossible. What I did is make it look grammar like mathematic. Meaning that, both have to have formulas. I first put simple present, simple past, simple future like the result of and equation, second look for the variables and with that make my full equation. For example you know that in English if you want to have a sentence in simple present you need to have verb in simple present and keywords that refers that your sentence will be in simple present like always, often, usually, every day, and etc. also have a subject and sometimes an object. So you have a formula like this: SIMPLE PRESENT = SUBJECT + VERB IN PRESENT + OBJECT + KEY WORD. Writing Russian is completely different that writing Spanish or English because they don’t use the same letters, they use Cyrillic letters butsome letters sound similar to the English or Spanish letters. For this quest I wrote in flashcards each letter and also the letter witch is written similar to English, and then wrote it down in a sheet of paper ten times each letter every day for a week. Make formulas helped me to find grammar easy and memorized the letters.
