Las mascotas pueden constituirse en un complemento importante para el desarrollo de los niños, tanto desde el punto de vistafísico como afectivo. Los niños aprenden a cuidar a las mascotas, llegan a conocer la importancia del cariño y el respeto hacia los animales, aprenden a dar para recibir, y muchas veces la mascota se convierte en la mejor compañía para el niño, y en algunos casos, en la única.

Pero precisamente por la importancia que tienen para algunos niños, es que debemos conocer bien los riesgos, con el propósitode prevenirlos apropiadamente.
Con los perros y los gatos, siempre existe el riesgo de un mordisco o un arañazo. Los niños tratan de jugar con los perros en los momentos más inoportunos, por ejemplo cuando están comiendo, y el perro o el gato, que aparentaban ser muy pacíficos, los muerden, o el perro que el niño tiene como mascota, no es el más apropiado por su temperamento.
