Chinese gooseberry - Carambola

The star fruit (carambola), also known as carambola, tamarind Chinese coolie tamarind, cucumber tree, carambolera, carambolero, Chinese star fruit or fruit is atropical evergreen shrub belonging Oxalidácea family.

It is native to Indonesia, India and Sri Lanka and is popular throughout Southeast Asia, Malaysia, Dominican Republic and parts of East Asia,[2] [3] Also in Colombia in the Cauca Valley region and on the island San Andres, Venezuela, Mexico, Honduras, Costa Rica, Panama, Guatemala, El Salvador, Peru (Tara poto, Huánuco, Iquitos, and part ofthe Peruvian Jungle) also on the coast of Ecuador and the Amazon region of Brazil.

It is a tropical perennial shrub 3-5 m tall. The leaves are distributed along the branches, 8-18 cm long. Ithas short inflorescences, axillary or in their place above the leaves, on peduncles 1 cm long.


Its fruit (carambola) occurs in clusters on the branches and trunk: berries thick, ovoid orellipsoid, 8-12 x 5-6 cm, yellow-orange at maturity, with 5 angles crashed. Its cross section is of a pentagram. Its flesh is juicy, slightly fibrous and acid. It contains vitamin A, vitamin C, phosphorusand potassium. It can be eaten raw but cooked, and is dressed with a delicious vinaigrette.

It multiplies by seed and layering and grafting. It is sensitive to frost.

The main producers areThailand, Sri Lanka, India, Brazil and Mamblas.


The consumption of carambola (or star fruit) in people with chronic kidney disease (CKD), especially those in advanced stages or who are ondialysis, is associated with severe neurotoxicity, even being reported a significant number of deaths secondary to such intoxication.
