Catedrales
Fxn: passage of materials by diffusion/filtration in sites where protection is not important; secretes substances in serosae
Location: kidney, lungs, endothelium,mesothelium
Simple cuboidal epithelial tissue
Fxn: secretion and absorption
Location: kidney, ovary surface (germinal epithelium)
Simple columnar epithelial tissue
Fxn: absorption; secretion of mucusciliated type propels mucus by ciliary action
Location:
Nonciliated: digestive tract; has microvilli
Ciliated: respiratory tract
Pseudostratified columnar epithelial
Fxn: secretion (of mucus);propulsion of mucus by ciliary action
Location
Nonciliated – sperm-carrying ducts and ducts of large glands
Ciliated: (+ mucus –secreting goblet cells) lines most of respiratory tract
Gobletcells secret mucin (mucin + h2O is mucus)
Mucus = thick, sticky substance that traps debris and pathogens in respiratory tract
Cilia on apical surface beat to create unidirectional current that movesmucus laden with debris and pathogens away from lungs
Stratified squamous epithelium
Fxn: protects underlying tissues in areas subjected to abrasion
Location:
Keratinized = epidermal of skinKeratinized stratified squamous epithelial tissue cells impregnated with tough fiberous protein called “keratin” which makes epithelium extremely abrasive-resistant
Non-keratinized = forms part ofmucus membrane which lines some structures in tracts of body; entry parts of tracts of body lined w/ this; vagina; esophagus, mouth
Confers protect but less abrasive-resistant (than keratinized) to allowfor secretion of products
Stratified cuboidal epithelial tissue
Fxn: secretion, protection
Location: lining of ducts of glands such as salivary glands and sweat glands
Stratified ColumnarEpithelial
Fxn: secretion, protection
Location: ducts of glands, pharynx and part of male urethra
Transitional Epithelium
Fxn: stretches readily and permits distension of urinary organ by contained...
