My team and I firmly believe that racism is here and does exist in Chile.
Racism is a universal problem, alwayshas been and always will be. Perhaps the best we can hope is management of the problem and build up some tolerance among our children and citizens to diminish the negative effects on the peopleaffected. And this is our team line.
We agree with the definition of the Proposition team.
I am . I will speak about the different types of racism that exist in our country.
My second speaker will talkabout Racism towards our indigenous people, the treatment of immigrant workers and the black people of Arica and Parinacota.
My third speaker will discuss the attitude of denial of this problem inChile.
My fourth speaker will summarize our case and I am confident he will convince you that our stand in right.
Ladies and gentlemen, racism is a rather complex concept. Racism means racialdiscrimination and it is alive in every society, country and region of the world and of course it is among us as well but most people would prefer to deny it even exists.
Racism is not just aboutdisliking or hating someone or their culture, but it is when that dislike and hatred of a person or culture leads another person to discriminate against someone else.
Racism includes things like nothiring a person because of their colour, not allowing the person to live in the neighbourhood they want to, not allowing them to attend the school or church of their choice. Racism means makingstatements that stereotype, demean or humiliate someone.
Chileans have experienced several types of racism like verbal racism, behavioural racism, institutional racism and macro social mode of racism.Verbal racism includes name calling like calling someone indio or Indian, negro or chino after stereotyping certain characteristics like primitive or prejudiced remarks and humiliation.
