Dia Mundial De La Salud
The World Health Day is celebrated on April 7 to commemorate the anniversary of the creation of the World Health Organization in 1948. Each year we choose a theme for that day thathighlights a priority area of concern for global public health.
The theme of 2013 is hypertension.
Hypertension
Hypertension - also known as high blood pressure - increases the risk of heartattacks, strokes and kidney failure. Uncontrolled hypertension can also cause blindness, heart rhythm irregularities and heart failure. The risk of these complications occur is greater if there are othercardiovascular risk factors such as diabetes.
One in three adults worldwide have hypertension. This proportion increases with age: one in ten people aged 20 to 40 years, and five out of ten 50 to 60years. The highest prevalence was observed in some low-income countries of Africa, believed that hypertension affects more than 40% of adults in many countries of the continent.
However, hypertensioncan be prevented and treated. In some developing countries, prevention and treatment of hypertension and other cardiovascular risk factors, has led to decrease deaths from heart disease. The risk ofdeveloping hypertension can be reduced:
• reducing salt intake
• a balanced diet
• avoiding the harmful use of alcohol
• exercising regularly
• maintaining a healthy weight
• avoiding theconsumption of snuff.
