RESUMEN
El trabajo de Ignaz Philipp Semmelweis sobre la fiebre puerperal en el siglo XIX reúne todas las características de la investigación operativa en salud: el método científico aplicado a la
solución de los problemas que enfrentan los usuarios de los
sistemas de salud en términos de calidad, eficiencia o efectividad. Aspectos que no puedenser ajenos a determinantes de la
salud como el género y la marginalidad social.
La investigación de Semmelweis se aleja de la concepción
positivista sobre la génesis del conocimiento científico, es investigación-acción en la que juegan un papel determinante los
elementos del entorno y no solo los del mundo natural. Se
trata de un investigador comprometido con la salud de las mujeres pobresatendidas en la Primera sala del Hospital General
de Viena. Su historia nos demuestra la importancia del dónde,
cuándo, quién y para quién se efectúa la investigación.
Es la intención de esta breve revisión, recuperar del siglo
XIX para los profesionales de la salud de este milenio, una lección sobre la trascendencia del trabajo socialmente comprometido y como la implementación y, en consecuencia, elimpacto
de las intervenciones en salud dependen en mucho de factores
personales, sociales, políticos y culturales, tales como el rechazo al conocimiento nuevo de quienes lo perciben como una
amenaza a su estabilidad.

ABSTRACT
The work of Ignaz Philipp Semmelweis on milk fever in thenineteenth century reunites all the characteristics of the operative research on health issues: the scientific method applied to
the solution of the problems that the users deal with regarding
the health system in terms of quality, efficiency or effectiveness.
Aspects not foreign to health issues such as gender and social
marginalization.
The research carried out by Semmelweis recedes from thepositivist conception on the genesis of scientific knowledge, in
which in the investigation-action the elements of the environment and not only the natural world play a determinant role.
He is a scholar engaged to help poor women being treated in
the First Hall of the General Hospital of Vienna. His story shows
us the importance of where, when, who and for who the research is carried out.
It is theintention of this brief review to recover from the
nineteenth century from the health experts in this millennium,
a lesson on the importance of the socially committed work and
