Dream Deferred

Langston Hughes (1902-1967) was born in Missouri, United States. He was a poet, novelist, and Afro-American columnist. He is remembered for Harlem Renaissance as one of the most important writers. As a member of an abolitionist family, Langston became an interpreter of the racism in his publications. The poems were meant to be sung. He died by complications of prostate cancer. The poem Dream Deferred was written in 1951. It was not the first time that Hughes writes about dreams. As writer of the Harlem Renaissance, he was constantly talking about the dreams of the black people to have racial equality. This poem is a prove of how we can use symbolisms to cause more impact to the readers. The poem talk about the hard life people of dark skin had to deal in that time, and how the dreams and expectations of change in their lives, for being treated like everyone else, were vanishing day by day.

At least at some part in our lives, we thought about how we would like our lives to be. In this poem, he started trying to have the attention of the readers by asking one simple question: “What happens to a dream deferred”. This is important, not only to tell usabout what the poem is about, but to make the readers to ask themselves that question and feel touched. Because we all dream.
One of the symbolisms in a story is “like a raisin in the sun”; he talks about the raisins like a dream that hadn’t been done in a long time. The grape lost his juices and the dream loses their strength.
Other of the symbolism is “Does it stink like rottenmeat? Is about heals that are not wounded. What he is really meaning is that people’s emotions are getting worst as they see that nothing is changing. That everything they are fighting for, maybe isn’t going to be done ever. It is hard for them since those people were dealing with so much racism, and America was supposed to be the place where your dreams come true. But in reality, all what theywanted, the equality and fairness, was looking too far to achieve.
“Those it stinks like rotten meat?” Dreams that are not accomplished will always be there. No matter if the person thinks that there’s not chance to get it. It will always be in your mind, and like that a meat if isn’t cooked it gets rotten. Dreams that are not pursued tend to be like a rotten meat…stuck.
Sometimes when weare mad, we try something sweet to deal with our emotion. In that way, the sugar is represented as the symbol of thinking that everything is good and as it supposed to be. Only that in the deep of our hearts, we know that there’s something fishy, and it’s not possible that (in this case) white people had more rights than me, or that I’m less because of my skin color.
“Maybe it just sag like aheavy load” , like the cross of our days, means that in the end, people who were dreaming but give up, are the causes that everything stays the same. All this steps and symbols lead us to the explosion that causes to want something but knowing that is not happening.
I had dreamed all my life. One of my deepest desires is to find a place in the world where I could feel like I belong. I’mnot really sure if that could be possible. But what makes me different than the people in the story? I have faith and hope. Not only this contributes me to deal with every challenge that’s can come with it, but it help me to fight for my dream. The difference is when you take action in your own life.
Those times, where the poem is settling, were very difficult. Not only because of the racismbut because people still reminds of World War II. I wasn’t there but I know that everything is better now. Those people, if they live know, are happy. Now they can vote, be around with white people, and so many things that couldn’t be possible without the abolition and other rights for black people. There is plenty of work to do, but I pray for the day that all the nations and cultures will...
