The Chimborazo glacier has decreased in recent decades, apparently by the combined influences of global warming, the Ashes from Tungurahua recent volcanic activity and El Niño.

Until the nineteenth century the Chimborazo was considered as the highest mountain on the planet.

In 1802 BaronAlexander von Humboldt, accompanied by Aimé Bonpland and the Ecuadorian Carlos Montufar tried to reach the summit, but declined to 5875 meters because of altitude sickness (soroche). At that point, the Baron was at the highest altitude reached by any European in recorded history.

The first man who came to the summit was Edward Whymper with brothers Louis and Jean-Antoine Carrel in 1880

Traditional use of Chimborazo ice

A tradition of the communities near the volcano, is to bring ice from the glaciers of the mountain to the people to prepare their drinks. These people are known as "The hieleros of Chimborazo." Today few people who engage in this activity, but still there are cut blocks of ice from the glacier on Tuesdays and Fridays, and are transported on mules to sellsnow cones, called "scrapes", usually located in the popular parks and markets in the city of Riobamba.

El Chimborazo es el volcán y montaña más alta del Ecuador y el punto más alejado del centro de la Tierra, es decir el punto más cercano al espacio exterior,[1] razón por la cual es llamado como «el punto más cercano al Sol»,[2] [3] debido a que el diámetro terrestre en la latitud ecuatorial es mayor que en la latitud del Everest(aproximadamente 28º al norte).[4] Su última erupción conocida se cree que se produjo alrededor del 550 dC.[5] Está situado en los Andes centrales, 150 km al sudoeste de Quito y 20 Km al noreste de Riobamba.

Ubicación
La cima del monte Chimborazo está sólo un grado al sur del ecuador, por lo que a pesar de que su elevación sobre el nivel del mar, quees 6310 msnm, 2530 m menor que el Everest, se encuentra a 6384,4 km del centro del planeta, lo que representa un 1,5 km más alejado que la cima del coloso asiático.[6] Está situado a 150 km al sudoeste de Quito y 20 Km al sureste de Riobamba.
