Causes
Tuberculosis (TB) is caused by pulmonary Mycobacterium tuberculosisbacteria and can be purchased by inhaling water droplets from a cough or sneeze of an infected person. This is called primary tuberculosis
The following individuals are at increased risk for active TB:• The elderly
• Babies
• People with weakened immune systems, for example due to SIDA, chemotherapy, diabetes or certain medications
The risk of contracting TB increases if you:
• Are in frequentcontact with people who have the disease.
• Have malnutrition.
• Live in or unsanitary living conditions of overcrowding
Symptoms
The primary stage of tuberculosis usually causes no symptoms. Whensymptoms of pulmonary tuberculosis is present, may include:
Coughing (sometimes with expectoration of mucus)
• Coughing up blood
• Excessive sweating, especially at night
• Fatigue
• Fever
•Unintentional weight loss
Other symptoms that may occur include:
• Shortness of breath
• Chest pain
• Wheezing
Treatment
The goal of treatment is to cure the infection with drugs that fightthe TB bacteria. Treatment of active pulmonary TB will always involve a combination of many drugs (usually four). Continue the administration of all drugs until lab tests show which medicines work best.The drugs most commonly used include:
• Isonizida
• Rifampin
• Pyrazinamide
• Ethambutol
Other drugs that can be used to treat tuberculosis include:
• Amikacin
• Ethionamide
• Moxifloxacin• aminosalicylic acid
• Streptomycin
Complications
Pulmonary TB can cause permanent lung damage if not treated promptly.
Medications used to treat TB may cause side effects, including liverproblems. Other side effects include:
• Changes in vision
• tears and urine orange or brown
• rash
