ACTIVE VOICE VERBAL TENSES

I. SIMPLE/CONTINOUS PRESENT
Present Time answers the question: What happens? Or what is happening? Formed: Subject + verb (present) (I work) or Subject + am / are / is + gerund (I am working).
Exercises:
1. The sun rises in the East and sets in the West.
2. Mr. Jackson goes to work by taxi every day. 
3. We sometimes dine at Peter's.
4. Ialways wake up before 7 a.m. 

II. PRESENT PERFECT/CONTINOUS

Present Perfect Time answers the question: What has happened? What has been happening? Formed: Subject + have / has + verb participle (I have worked). Subject + have / has + been + gerund (I have been working).
Exercises
1. I have just prepared some coffee, would you like some?
2. My brother has had that old car for a long time.3. Mr. Miller has lived in that house since 1995.
4. Daisy and her brother have taken English lessons for five years.
5. Mrs. Taylor has already finished her work.

III. SIMPLE/CONTINOUS PAST
Simple past answers the question: What happened? Or what was happening? Formed: Subject + verb in past (I worked). Subject + was / were + gerund (I was working).

Exercises:
1. I lost  mykeys yesterday.
2. It rained  last night.
3. My neighbors bought  a new car.
4. Grace was taking a shower when the phone rang.
5. While we were walking down the street, we saw Mrs. Pierce.
IV. PAST PERFECT/CONTINOUS
Past Perfect answers the question: What had happened? Or what had been happening? Formed: Subject + had + verb participle (I had worked). Subject + had + been + gerund(I had been working).
Exercises:
1. When John got off the train, he realized that someone had stolen his wallet.
2. Jane did not go to the movies because she had seen  the film twice
3. Ralph had been driving for hours when he finally stopped to rest.
4. The children were out of breath because they had been running.
5. Tim had been living in that house for decades before hemoved out.

V. SIMPLE/CONTINOUS FUTURE
Simple Future answers the question: What will happen? Or what will be happening? Formed: Subject + will + verb present (I will work). Subject + will + be + gerund (I will be working).
Exercises:
1. I will see  you tomorrow. Good-bye!
2. I promise I will call  you next week.
3. I think I will stay  home the whole day because it is snowing.4. Dr. Hall will be giving  a speech on global warming next Friday.
5. At this time tomorrow, Jane will be attending  a lecture on 20th century literature.

VI. FUTURE PERFECT/CONTINOUS
Future Perfect answers the question: What Will Have Happened? Or What Will Have Been happening? Formed: Subject + will + have + verb participle (I Will Have worked). Subject + will + have been + verb inprogressive (I Will Have been working).
Exercises:
1. Melissa will have improved her English by the time she comes back from the U.S.
2. The waste from this factory will have polluted  the water tables by the year 2015.
3. At 6:00, I will have been waiting  for Mark for two hours.
4. By the time he moves to Los Angeles, Dr. Parker will have been teaching  at university for 11years.
5. Martin will have been living  in Boston for six months by the time he is admitted to Harvard University.

VII. FUTURE "GOING TO"/CONTINOUS
The future (going to) answer the question: What is going to happen? Or what is going to be happening? Formed: Subject + am / is / are + going to + verb in present (I am going to work). Subject + am / is / are + going to + be + gerund (I am going tobe working).
Exercises
1. I am going to leave  for Asia next month.
2. We are going to watch  a movie on TV tonight.
3. The company is going to raise  its prices next summer.
4. Alice is going to be lying  in the sun tomorrow morning.
5. Mr. Parker is going to be driving to Washington D.C. next Friday.
6. Granny is going be sewing her apron tomorrow.
