Sparta
The Spartans are the equal to the dorians.
Located on the Peloponnesus
The region is also called Laconia
Sparta expanded because they had a large population; needed more land.
Conquereda city-state called Messenia
Agricultural community & very conservative. (Not open to new ideas)
Sparta was a very close community; they made the P.O.W (Prisoners Of War) into helots (Serfs).Serfs Slaves
The Messenias almost overthrew Sparta’s government.
Sparta established a Totalitarian state. They controlled everyone. Used fear & control.
The military is the government.The Perioikoi were business people.
Spartan way: No questions, no debate, and no discussions. Just be quiet and do what you’re told.
Boys were taking from their families at age 7.
Could marry whenthey were 20, but had to live with the guys.
Were in the military until they were 60, might retire.
Children that had deformities were killed.
The government didn’t want people to out thegovernment
Family was secondary
Girls didn’t have any formal education
Their purpose was to have kids
Went through physical Ed. So they could be in shape.
Very conservative, had to be courageous, hadto follow the Spartan way.
Sparta had the best military in Greece.
All the rest of Greece didn’t like them.
Economically Sparta had a lot of farmers.
Alone & isolated

The warrior Aristocracy was their government, upper class warriors.
Had a dual monarchy (2 kings)
The main power were the council of elders (20+2kings)
60+ Retired soldiers
Apella - assemblywith 8000 people
They had 5 ephors, people that checked on everybody. They reported people. They made sure society stayed as it was.
Were governed by an Aristocratic oligarchy (A small group ofpeople having control of a country, organization, or institution.)
They formed a league called Peloponnesian League to protect Sparta.
