At the beginning of the story Mathilde is unhappy with herself andher social position. When her husband told her about the invitation that he got, she express her sadness crying because she can get one of those fancy dress. "I have nothing to wear and therefore ican't go to the party"(Maupassant 188). She is so concentrated in herself and in to get what she wants that she ignores or she just not see how she harms to others. Mathilde cannot appreciate what shehas. She is ambitious but not want to work to came her dreams real. When, for a night, Mathilde has everything she wants she throws it away by covering up the fact she lost the necklace. Thus, sheloses everything to replace that necklace. This loss changes her.
Mathilde's weakness was a huge flaw. The weakness results in the loss of everything she holds dear. She also loses who she is. Mathildedevelops new traits, such as her coarseness, her loudness, and physical strength. When Mrs. Forrestier saw her Mathilde was unnoticed, unrecognized. “My poor Mathilde you have change so much”(Maupassan 192).
