Explore the poem showing how the writing conveys the poet’s sense of loss and anguish
The poem “The voice” by Thomas Hardy is a poem that is soaked in anguish. The writer is blunt at the moment ofconveying his feeling of loneliness, of having lost the only thing that bound him with reality.
To begin with, the first stanza starts with a sentence that anticipates the writer’s mood: “Woman muchmissed”. This first statement reveals how the writer is feeling at the moment of writing. He is thinking about a woman that is not with him, despite the fact he would like to have her by his side. Notonly because of that, but also because he begs the woman to call his name: “how you call to me, call to me”. He needs her to need him as much as he needs her.
Saying that now you arenot as you were
When you had changed from the one who was all to me,
But as at first, when our day was fair.

These sentences are very interesting since they provethat, even though the woman he misses is not the same as the one he used to love, he would still aim to be with her. He wonders about what happened to them, what happened to their relationship. Whatchanged? What was it that broke them apart? The woman he is referring to is highly likely someone who was a lover, besides being someone whose departure scarred him for life. Someone with whom hewould probably have liked to marry with, until something changed. He was left with the doubt of what changed thus. He was given no explanation why, or if given, the justification might have not fulfilledhis question. Moreover, he may have not comprehended the true reasons behind her leaving. This unanswered question has been in the back of his mind since then and has been troubling him. He will neverbe able to get rid of it, to heal the wound, unless an answer is provided to him.
