Glee’s music
Glee is a famous Fox TV show that tells about a group of teens in high school in the school’s choir named “New Directions”. The main characters are named Rachel Berry (Leah Michel), Finn Hudson (Cory Monteith), Kurt Hummel (Chris Kolffer), Queen (Dianne Agron), Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) and Will Shuester (Matthew Morrison); in fact many musical critics have said that, of theseones, the best singers are Lea Michel, Chris Kolffer and Matthew Morrison.
The main idea of the TV show is to show a typical teen’s life and troubles when they get into the school’s choir.
The show's musical performances have been a commercial success, with over twenty-one million copies of Glee cast single releases purchased digitally, and over nine million albums purchased worldwide. In 2009, theGlee cast had 25 singles chart on the Billboard Hot 100, the most by any artist since The Beatles had 31 songs in the chart in 1964; in 2010, it placed 80 singles on the Billboard Hot 100, far outstripping the previous record. In February 2011, Glee surpassed Elvis as the artist with the most songs placed on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, though less than one-fourth of them have charted for morethan one week. The cast performance of "Don't Stop Believing'" was certified gold on October 13, 2009, achieving over 500,000 digital sales, and on March 16, 2011, received platinum certification for having sales of over a million. The series' cover versions had a positive effect on sales of Rihanna's "Take a Bow" increasing by 189 percent after the song was covered in the Glee episode "Showmance".However, there has also been critical condemnation of the cast performances, with Jon Dolan for Rolling Stone commenting that Matthew Morrison "couldn't rap his way out of a 98° rehearsal", and all music’s Andrew Leahey opining that Cory Monteith and Dianna Agron "can't sing nearly as well as their co-stars". During the second season, Rob Sheffield for Rolling Stone noted the Britney Spears andRocky Horror tribute episodes as examples when he lauded Glee and its choice of music. He praised Murphy for his selection and resurrection of "forgotten" pop songs and compared the show's uniqueness to "MTV in its prime" as the embodiment of popular culture.
Some artists, including Slash, Kings of Leon, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Foo Fighters have declined to have their songs used on the showleaving creator Ryan Murphy unhappy with their decision and often verbally attacking the artists saying they are making a poor decision by not allowing their music on his show.
But Glee hadn’t only performed covers, they also have their own original songs, such as in the 6th episode of season 2, named “Original songs” where each one of the students had to write their own song, and choose which singin the regional.
I am amazed with the way the music gets involved in the show, and how the characters use them to express their feelings and the way that the writer (Ryan Murphy) is inspired to use the songs and adapt a dialogue and situation that goes with the song and create a really good story.
Glee’s producers and director have many plans for the show, like the one that just had finished,called “The Glee Project” which is a contest where Ryan and his colleagues choose the next actors for the serie; in this show they also performed many of cover songs, but in more variety, like for example, in one of the last episodes, a girl called Lindsay sang “Gimme, Gimme” from the “Thoroughly Modern Mille “ Broadway musical (which is one of my favorite songs ever)
As you can notice, thereare some things I love about glee like the way they act, the songs, and the way they give you a message; but also there are so many things I dislike or I disagree with the show, like the SUPER extremely spin Queen’s story took, or how Rachel’s love story is like instable, first she loves Finn, then no one, then again Finn, but Puck at the same time, then Jesse but then she is confused, I just...
