SCENE I. Belmont. Avenue to PORTIA'S house.
[Enter LORENZO and JESSICA]
LORENZO: (Looking to the Sky) It was on a beautiful night like this that Troilus climbed the walls of Troy, looking for his loved one.
JESSICA: It was on a night like this that Thisbe came to meet her lover, but was frightened by a lion.
LORENZO: And it was on a night like this that Jessica ran awayfrom her father, taking all his money, she ran away from Venice to Belmont with a lover (laughs).
JESSICA: (Also laughs) And on a night like this Lorenzo swore that he loved her, stealing her heart with his promises to be faithful, and not one true!
LORENZO: It was on a night like this that Jessica said terrible things about her love and he forgave her!
JESSICA: I wouldhave the last word in this game, but I can hear someone coming!
LORENZO: Who comes here in the quiet of the night?
[Enter STEPHANO]
MESSENGER: A friend.
LORENZO: A friend? Tell me your name, please.
MESSENGER: My name is Stephano, and I have come to tell you that my mistress will be in Belmont before morning. She is on her way home now.
LORENZO: Who comes with her?STEPHANO: A man of God and, her maid. Please tell me, is my master back yet?
LORENZO: No, we have not heard from him
[Enter LAUNCELOT]
LAUNCELOT: (Yelling) Oho! Oho! Hello? Anybody?
LORENZO: Who calls?
LAUNCELOT: (Loudly) Master Lorenzo? Master Lorenzo? Master Lorenzo?
LORENZO: Stop! I’m here.
LAUNCELOT: (Pretending not to see Lorenzo) Hello? Where? Where? Who?
LORENZO: Right her! (Mad)LAUNCELOT: My master is coming, with lots of good news. He will be here before morning. I might be going for something to drink. Would you like anything?
Exit LAUNCELOT
LORENZO: Sweet heart! Let’s go inside or wait, should we go in? Stephano, please tell everyone that your mistress is coming, put some music please.
[Exit Stephano]
It is a beautiful night, let’s sit here andhear the beautiful music. Sit down Jessica. Look, the sky is full of bright stars, like angels singing.
[Enter Musicians]
Come and wake the moon with your music!
[Music]
JESSICA: I never feel happy when I hear sweet music.
LORENZO: This is because you are listening too carefully. Listen to the music, it is magic!
[Enter PORTIA and NERISSA]
PORTIA: That candle is solittle; it’s like something good shining out in a terrible world.
NERISSA: When the moon was shining, we could not see the candle.
PORTIA: Great things always make lesser things look smaller. Listen, music!
NERISSA: It is your music-makers, madam
PORTIA: It sounds better at night.
NERISSA: That is because everything is so quiet, madam.
PORTIA: So many things can be perfect when the rime andplace are right. Look now the moon is sleeping and will not be woken.
[Music ceases]
LORENZO: That is Portia’s voice. Dear lady, welcome home!
PORTIA: We have been praying for our husbands. Have they come back yet?
LORENZO: Not yet, madam, they are on their way
PORTIA: Nerissa , tell my servants to say nothing about us going away. Nor you, Lorenzo, or you, Jessica.
[A trumpet sounds]LORENZO: Your husband is coming, don’t worry.
PORTIA: Today it’s like a day when the sun does not come out.
[Enter BASSANIO, ANTONIO, GRATIANO, and their followers]
BASSANIO: [Hearing Portia’s words] Just by being here you can turn night into day.
PORTIA: Let me give light, but let me not be light;
For a light wife can make a heavy husband,
And never be Bassanio so for me:
You arewelcome home, my lord.
BASSANIO: I thank you, madam. Please welcome my friend. [Turns to Antonio] This is the man— this is Antonio—to whom I owe so much.
PORTIA: You owe him a lot. For I hear that he gave a lot for you.
ANTONIO: Finally, and happily, I am free.
PORTIA: Sir, you are very welcome to our house. But let us show you that welcome in more ways than words.
