In The Heart Does Not Bend we encounter the various women in the Galloway family. These women have all had their hardships and the main character of the story, Molly, tell us all about the lives ofthese women along with all their hardships, all their difficulties and their own discoveries, in her case particularly. Most of these particular hardships cause her to experiment differently, somethingthat nobody else in her family achieves and leads her into a relationship with a woman, something that is completely understandable by a chunk of her family due to her troubles with the opposite sex.Molly was raised by her grandmother in Jamaica. Uncle Mikey also lived alongside them, the one consistent man figure in the house though he wasn’t always that way. He was either out of the house,throwing parties and such. It also raised the question of his sexuality, something which soon led to the departure of Molly and her grandmother from Jamaica and onto Canada.
Another male figure soonmade his prominent appearance in the first part of this novel, a gardener, Myers. He was a good father like figure to Molly and was gentle to her grandmother, showing his affections late at night atthe same time that Molly was asleep. He also gave Molly a great foundation for a career she will later on explore.
Freddie is a big example as to the negative male influence in the Galloway family.He’s a complete womanizer that abandons things as soon as they become too complicated for him to handle. He left his girlfriend in Jamaica shortly after her pregnancy, fleeing to Canada and promisingto send money for this son’s wellbeing. He is a severe serial dater and abuser. His son with the one relationship he took seriously was left under the care of his mother since his wife left him dueto his abusive ways and Freddie himself had left for Europe. Like father like son you could say. He ends up almost exactly like his father, getting into trouble and causing all sorts of chaos. Molly...
