Introducción
El inglés es una lengua germánica occidental originada de los dialectos anglo-frisios traídos a Britania por los invasores germanos desde varias partes de lo que ahora es el noroeste de Alemania y el norte de los Países Bajos. Inicialmente, el inglés antiguo era un grupo de varios dialectos, que reflajaba el variado origen de los reinos anglosajones deInglaterra. Uno de estos dialectos, el Late West Saxon, en cierto momento llegó a dominar. La lengua inglesa antigua orginal fue luego influenciada por dos oleadas invasoras: las primera fue de hablantes de la rama escandinava de las lengua germánicas, que conquistaron y colonizaron partes de Britania en los siglos VIII y IX; la segunda fue de los normandos en el siglo XI, que hablaban antiguonormando y desarrollaron una variedad del inglés denominada como anglonormado. Estas dos invasiones hicieron que el inglés se mezclara hasta cierto punto.

La cohabitación con los escandinavos derivó en una significativa simplificación gramatical y un enriquecimiento léxico del núcleo anglofrisio del inglés; la posterior ocupación normanda llevó a un injerto de una capa de palabras más elaboradasprovenientes de las lenguas romances (derivadas del latín). Esta influencia normanda en el ignlés penetró a través de las cortes y del gobierno. Así el inglés se fue desarrollando en una lengua de préstamos con gran flexibilidad, con una gran variedad y un enorme y variado vocabulario.
