3) What did Hitler want and how did the democracias try to stop him? Hitler wanted to unite all German-speaking peoples (This went against the terms of the Treaty of Versailles). He also wanted to bring all Germans into one state so as to build an empire.
4) Where and when did the war break out?In September 1939, Hitler attacked Poland who was defeated. Her territory was divided between Russia and Germany (because of the treaty). By then, Britain and France had declared war on Germany.
5) To what extent was the outbreak of war in 1939 the result of a German attempt to undo the Treaty of Versailles? In the end, the Treaty of Versailles almost surely caused World War II. Had it been softer on Germany, she would have been stronger and would not have faced as much economic and social problems. Had the treaty been harsher, Germany would not have had the power to make war. Even with a miserably ineffective treaty,World War II could still have been avoided. Under Chamberlain’s nose, Germany began to remilitarize and was allowed to annex enormous territories under Hitler in the 1930’s. Nobody would make even the slightest move to enforce the clauses of the Treaty of Versailles, and this was the reason that Hitler’s army became powerful enough to threaten European peace once again. The faults in the Treaty ofVersailles were great, but the faults of those who refused to later enforce it were far greater.
6) Which were the two fighting blocs and wich nations were included in each of them? On the one hand, the alliance between Germany, Italy and Japan made up the Axis powers. On the other hand, the USSR, Great Britain and the USA made up the Allies.
7) What was the Nazi-Soviet Pact, why was it signed and how successful was it? It was an agreement between Hitler and Stalin that said there would be peace between Russia and Germany. Hitler wanted to conquer Poland, which was one major part of the agreement. The Nazi-Soviet Non-Aggression Pact was signed in August 1939. Hitler's main reason for the Non-Aggression Pact was so that when Britain declaredwar on Germany after he invaded Poland, Russia stayed out of the way. He only had to fight Britain, and France (so far) instead of Britain, France, and Russia. About two years after the pact was signed, Hitler broke the terms of the pact, and attacked the Soviet Union.
9) The Rome-Berlin_Tokyo AxisIn 1940, during World War II, the military alliance of Italy and Germany—the so-called Rome-Berlin Axis—was extended to include Japan and became the Rome-Berlin-Tokyo Axis. The three countries and their allies, known collectively as the Axis Powers, fought against the Allied Powers in the war.
19) Weapons and strategies.
The most important fighting machines were the tanks andaeroplanes. There were also ships, U-boats used by Germany, atomic bombs used by the USA and kamikaze pilots used by Japan (they were pilots who crashed their planes, loaded with explosives, on to American battleships).
It was a Blitzkrieg war, meaning lightning war. Blitzkrieg tactics were used: soldiers launched a surprise attack, moved at very great speed and took the key positions.
The first attackcame from the air. They destroyed important positions (bomber pilots learned to strike with accuracy)
Then the invasion continued with fast-moving and well-armed columns of tanks. Behind them, the motorised infantry (soldiers transported by lorry or motorcycle). They attacked e.g.: cities and ports and not being able to communicate and organise a defence, the enemy surrendered unconditionally....
