Fall-rise and rise-fall tones followed by a tail
Fall-rise tone followed by a tail of one syllable: when we have a fall-rise tone the tonic syllablekeep the ¨fall¨ part and the tail keeps the ¨rise¨ part
Fall-rise tone followed by a tail of more than one syllable: we have two possibilities, when your tail has astress syllable and when it doesn’t have one. In the first situation, the normal pitch movement is for the pitch to fall on the tonic syllable and to remain low until thelast stressed syllable in the tail, the pitch then rises from that point up to the end of the tone-unit. In the second situation the rise happens on the finalsyllable.
Rise-fall tones followed by a tail of one syllable: The ¨rise¨ part of the tone takes place on the first (tonic) syllable and the ¨fall¨ part in on the second.Rise-fall tones followed by a tail of more than one syllable: In this case the syllable following the tonic syllable is always higher and any following syllables arelow.
What is a Head?
All that part of a tone-unit that extends from the first stressed syllable up to (but not including) the nuclear one or the tonic syllable.
Highheads: The stressed syllable which begins the head is high in pitch; usually it is higher than the beginning pitch of the tone on the tonic syllable. Are shown byusing the normal stress symbol in front of the stressed syllables of the head.
Low heads: The stressed syllable which begins the head is low in pitch; usually it islower than the beginning pitch of the tone unit on the tonic syllable. Are shown by using a lowered stress symbol in front of the stressed syllables of the head.
