The Atlantic Ocean is to the west, the Celtic Sea is to the south and the Irish Sea is to the east.
* Ireland is an island to the north-westof continental Europe. It is the third-largest island in Europe and the twentieth-largest island on Earth.[4] To its east is the larger island of Great Britain, from which it is separated by the IrishSea.
It´s largest city is Dublín, the capital.
Since 1922, Ireland has been partitioned between two political entities:
* The Republic of Ireland, formed as the Irish Free State on 6 December1922, a sovereign state that covers five-sixths of the island. It´s capital is Dublin.
* Northern Ireland, established on 3 May 1921, a part of the United Kingdom that covers the remaining portionof the island. It´s capital is Belfast, with the capital of the United Kingdom being at London, England.
Traditionally, Ireland is subdivided into fourprovinces: Connacht (west), Leinster (east), Munster (south) and Ulster (north).
*Ireland's largest religious group is Christianity.
-Irish culture has had a significant influence on other cultures, particularly in the fields of literature and,to a lesser degree, science and education. A strong indigenous culture exists, as expressed for example through Gaelic games, Irish music and the Irish language,
Over the past 1000 years orso, Vikings, Normans, Scots and English have all added to the Gaelic population and have had significant influences on Irish Culture.
Some of the most visited sites in Ireland include Bunratty Castle,the Rock of Cashel, the Cliffs of Moher, Holy Cross Abbey and Blarney Castle. Historically important monastic sites include Glendalough and Clonmacnoise, which are maintained as national monuments inthe Republic of Ireland.
Dublin is the most heavily touristed region and home to several of the most popular attractions such as the Guinness Storehouse and Book of Kells.
