Adjective Clauses
Subordinate clauses can be used as adjectives in sentences. A subordinate clause that modifies a noun or pronoun is called an adjective clause.

Adjective: The skillfulcartoonist smiled.
Adjective Phrase: The cartoonist, at her desk, smiled.
Adjective Clause: The cartoonist, who was drawing rapidly, smiled.

The relative pronouns who, whom, whose, which, and thatintroduce most adjective clauses. Who, whom, and whose usually refer to people. Which usually refers to things. That may refer to people or things.

The faces that appear in her cartoons are expressive.
Ahalo, which indicates goodness, is used in cartoons.
Characters who are in love have hearts over their heads.

Adjective clauses usually follow the nouns or pronouns they modify. The relativepronoun relates the clause to the modified noun or pronoun. For example, in the sentences above, that refers to faces. Which refers to halo, and who refers to Characters.

The words when and where maybegin adjective clauses.

This is the school where the cartoonist teaches.
This is the day when she is teaching.

Two short sentences can often be combined into one longer sentence that has anadjective clause.

This cartoon won a prize. I drew it.
This cartoon, which I drew, won a prize.
