COMENTARIO DE TEXTO
NOTA preliminar:
El comentario de texto es el mejor ejercicio para adquirir práctica de lectura y comprensión de textos
literarios. Aunque al principio les cueste, agradecerán este aprendizaje a lo largo de todos susestudios en
este Grado. Es una tarea mucho más sencilla de lo que pueda parecer en un primer momento. Consiste
simplemente en aplicar los conocimientos adquiridos mediante la lectura del manual y otros materiales de
trabajo, como las audiciones recomendadas, y de la obra literaria de la que el texto forma parte, junto con
la práctica de la traducción y el dominio razonable de estrategias y recursosliterarios básicos. Este
dominio lo adquirirán con la práctica, mediante la lectura atenta y la consulta frecuente del glosario que
se les facilita al final de la Guía de estudio. Con la práctica del comentario de texto conseguirán extraer el
sentido profundo de un texto y, a la vez, caer en la cuenta de todos los elementos que contribuyen a crear
ese sentido. Entenderán que los recursosestilísticos no son ornamentales sino funcionales, es decir tienen
una cometido: aumentar o ensanchar el poder evocador del lenguaje y, de este modo, contribuir a una
representación mental más viva de la escena descrita en el texto. Con estos ejercicios mejorarán
sustancialmente su conocimiento de la lengua inglesa y, simultáneamente, desarrollarán su imaginación e
irán adquiriendo o incrementandoel gusto por la literatura, objetivo prioritario de esta asignatura.

Tema 1. La épica anglosajona y el romance medieval o novela de caballería.
1. Lea con atención el siguiente texto y tradúzcalo libremente:
“Time and again, foul things attacked me,
lurking and stalking, but I lashed out,
gave as good as I got* with my sword.
My flesh was not for feasting on,
there would be no monstersgnawing and gloating
over their banquet at the bottom of the sea.
Instead in the morning, mangled and sleeping
the sleep of the sword, they slopped and floated
like the ocean’s leavings*. From now on
sailors would be safe, the deep-sea raids
were over for good. Light came from the east,

went quiet; I could see headlands

treat you: When you are working with a lot of strong-willed people, you have to be able to give as good
as you get.
Usage notes: often used to describe an argument or a fight: Pat had a black eye and a couple of bruises,
but he gave as good as he got, or better.
