Louise Jackson is a 49-year-old woman who presents to her primary care physician (PCP) after her gynecologist recently diagnosed her with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) during anevaluation for amenorrhea. She complains of increasing fatigue, which she attributes to being overweight. She states her last appointment with her PCP was over 2 years ago. She is married for 23 years withtwo children. Works full-time as insurance consultant which is telephone based from home. No alcohol or tobacco use. Rarely exercises and admits to trying fad diets for weight loss with little success.She reports adherence to her medications. She is an African-American woman with central obesity.
Signs and symptoms: Frequent fatigue, occasional polydipsia, polyphagia, weakness, andlightheadedness upon standing. Denies blurred vision, chest pain, dyspnea, tachycardia, dizziness, or tingling or numbness in extremities, leg cramps, peripheral edema, changes in bowel movements, GI bloating orpain, nausea or vomiting, urinary incontinence, or presence of skin lesions.

Dr. G:Buenos días señora Louise, siéntese por favor.
Louise: Buenos días doctor J J
Dr. G: A ver señora Louise, ¿a qué se debe su visita?
Louise: Bueno doctor, no me viene el periodo desde hace varios mesesy no mantengo relaciones sexuales. Esto me preocupa mucho, primera vez que me pasa.
Dr. G: aja.
Narrador: la amenorrea es una afección que ocurre cuando una mujer que ha estado teniendo ciclosmenstruales normales deja de menstruar durante 6 o más meses. Una mujer es más propensa a sufrir amenorrea si es obesa, como nuestra paciente.
Dr. G.: bueno le realizaré el examen rutinario ginecológico...
