Recycle Paper

The meeting held last week was a big success, and we welcome all new members. The coming year looks to be a busy one and the new officers will have their hands full accomplishingall of our goals! Some of the new projects we have voted to undertake include:
Adopting a 3-mile section of Route 47 and organizing a litter cleanup twice a month
Participation in National AirPollution Awareness Week activities
Putting on a composting seminar out by the greenhouses late this spring.
These are our three biggest commitments so far for the rest of the school year, but ourcontinued effort with the recycling program in several local communities is still keeping us very busy.
Awareness Update
The MacHenniston Construction and Development Group is going forward with plans towipe out forty acres of wetlands to create additional parking for the West Haven Mall. Though these wetlands do not fall under the protective arm of the Wetlands Preservation Act, they provide acrucial watershed area for several local streams and aquifers. In addition, they provide winter foraging grounds for the endangered Red Cheek Spotted Sparrow. A meeting is being held with the TownCouncil on May 11th at 8 p.m. to discuss possible options. One of the proposed options is a six-level parking garage that will provide the same number of spaces as the conventional lot but will occupy onlytwo acres of land. In addition, the garage will allow more convenient access to the Mall entrance and will be sheltered from the elements. We are trying to get as many of our members and theirfriends to attend this meeting as possible to back this proposal.
Recycling News
Many of you have asked what happened to the special recycling bins that we had placed outside all residence hall commonareas and in several administrative buildings. Well, the news is good!
