Indie rock is a musical genre that originated in the UK and U.S. in the 1980s. Of great diversity, presents various sub-genres, including the lo-fi, post-rock, math rock, indie pop, dream pop, noise rock, space rock, sadcore, riot grrrl and emo music, among others.
The term was originally used to describe labels, however, eventually became associated with the music they produced,used interchangeably with the term alternative rock. Then, as the bands of grunge and punk revival American, then British Britpop bands, broke into the music market of the 1990s, it became used as an identifier of such groups, although generally belong to the rock alternative route or did not take the aesthetics imposed by these movements and that made these popular. It was observed that indie rock has a relatively high proportion of female artists compared to previous genres of rock, a trend exemplified by the development of feminist riot Riot grrrl music of acts like Bikini Kill, Bratmobile, 7 Year Bitch, Team Dresch, Huggy Bear, Hole and Babes in Toyland.
