Earthquakes
Measuring earth quakes.
Scientist today can detect even the smallest earthquake, one that you and I could not even feel, they can also determine the straight of anearthquake, they use a recording instrument named seismograph.
There are 2 main scales to measure the quakes the Richter scale and the mercalli scale.
The Richter Scale.
Invented in 1935 byCharles F. Richter of the United States .
It gives one number from 1 to 10, referring with the magnitude or the size, ore power of the earthquakes .
Each increasing number multiplies thepower of the earthquake by ten.
Mercalli
The Italian seismologist Guiseppe Mercalli devised twelve levels of earthquake intensity to the smallest to the greatest.
This are the twelveintensities of the Mercalli scale:
1. Nothing felt
2. Suspended lamps and plant holders swing slightly
3. A vibration like a truck passing
4. Doors shake and creak, walls makecracking sound.
5. Window s dishes broken
6. Furniture moves overturned ,some people run out
7. Every one run outside poor houses have major damage
8. Walls collapsed ,statues and monuments falls over
9. Tall buildings partially collapse
10. Landslides on slopes ,many structures destroyed
11. Huge cracks in the ground ,bridges fall, earthliquification swallow houses
12. Damage total
What do you do in a quake?
If you are inside , don’t run outside, it seems safer out there but flying objects could injure or kill you.Stand under a doorframe , wich is reinforced. Bathrooms are specially well constructer . you can crouch under a table until the shaking stops. Don’t go outdoors until the shaking is over ,amajor earthquake is not just one shake and stay calm ,many aftershocks will also occur as the crust settle dawn.
If you are out side , stay away from trees ,buildings , and any power lines.
