This book written by Steve Brouwer goes into detail about the progress and implementation of free health care by Cuba. This book begins with how Che Guevara stillbelieved he was a doctor as well as a revolutionary. Che along with Fidel embarked on a mission to create a Cuba with free health care that would have doctors from different background and not justelite classes. The author talks about how in other countries with capitalism such as the United States, Doctors enter this field to remain or enter the elite class. Doctors in Cuba before the revolutionavoided areas with high poverty levels. This particular reason is why Che believed that if you brought students from areas such as the country side with high poverty levels or even middle class thatthey would run back to their ‘’brothers’’.
After the revolution the new Cuban government started to make large changes with the countries health care system. The health care system was nationalizedand this was help to meet the issues of doctor shortages as well as to help treat the less fortunate and to help treat the less fortunate the reduced the prices of medicine. This new health caresystem allowed for Cuban doctors 5o study medicine for free and this abolished the notion of doctors being an elite career. These new medical schools focused on whole body health care instead ofspecialization. The Cuban government along with these medical schools created new curriculum which was discussed with other countries such as Canada and Australia. This new curriculum allowed for students tostudy medicine in general but also to understand their patient.
Cuban doctors are known not only for helping their own less fortunate but also to help abroad as such as in places like Nicaragua,South Africa while fighting HIV, and Tanzania.
