Haile Selassie I (born Tafari Makonnen, Ethiopia, July 23, 1892 - August 27, 1975) was the last emperor of Ethiopia (de jure: 1931-1975; de facto:1931-1936 and 1941-1974). Ascended the throne in 1931, establishing an absolutist regime, which would delay the Italian invasion in 1936, to retake power in 1952 and completed in 1974 with thesocialist revolution that overthrew him.
The Rastafari movement believes in a Messiah Selassie as Black, Christ came in his role as King. This movement spread mainly in Jamaica since the thirties and thenthe world since the seventies, mainly due to the success of Jamaican Bob Marley, a Rastafarian singer.

Son of Ras (Prince) Makonnen (governor of Harar), and Weyziro (lady) Yeshimebet Abajifar Ali, inthe village of Ejersa Goro. His real name was Tafari Makonnen, and the position he held before becoming emperor was to flush (prince) like his father. It was called Ras Tafari, later changing hisname when he assumes the throne. Haile Selassie's Solomonic dynasty belonged to one of the oldest in the world. The Ethiopians say that the members of this dynasty are descendants of the union of KingSolomon and the Queen of Sheba, Makeda, as explained by the Kebra Nagast, a book that founded the dynasty Ethiopian Ethiopian Coptic Christianity (using texts from the Old and New Testament), one of thefirst Christian cults exist. Haile Selassie I descended through the male line (more specifically his grandmother, Princess Sahle Selassie Tenagnework, aunt of Emperor Menelik II). Among theEthiopians became known as Janhoy, Meri and Abba Tekel Talaqu.
The Empress Zewditu crowned him Negus (ruler) in 1928. After her death, was proclaimed and crowned Negus Nagast ze-'Ityopp'ya (King of Kings ofEthiopia) on November 2, 1930 in a ceremony attended by representatives of twelve foreign countries, including Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester (son of George V and brother of Edward VIII and George...
